Peruvian fresh figs and pomegranates can be safely imported into the U.S., according to new pest risk assessments from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA said it would take comments on its decision until May 13, and then make a formal decision on whether to allow imports of the fruit. Under the terms of the USDA opinion, Peruvian figs must be irradiated upon arrival to the U.S. and will be subject to inspection. Interested parties can make comments about Peruvian fresh fig imports at the regulations.gov website. For fresh pomegranates, the USDA also said the fruit would be required to be inspected in Peru before departure and irradiated upon arrival into the U.S. for South American and Mediterranean fruit fly. Comments on the USDA pest risk assessment on pomegranates are being accepted at www.regulations.gov website..
