Food Irradiation

What's For Dinner

In March 2014, Macedonia announced plans for supplying a irradiation device that will improve the quality of food products," according to project coordinator Dr Hristina Spasovska.

Food irradiation (the application of ionizing radiation to food) is a technology that improves the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects. Like pasteurizing milk and canning fruits and vegetables, irradiation can make food safer for the consumer. Food irradiation is currently permitted by over 50 countries.

Food irradiation is well-known technology worldwide, being used for 40 years for improving the quality of polymers and other materials, Spasovska said recently at the national workshop 'Assessment and opportunities for implementation of technologies for the treatment of food with ionizing radiation in Macedonia', funded by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
