Commercial irradiation has been successfully carried out for approximately 40 years at the Hokkaido Shihoro Irradiation Center. Only potato irradiation to prevent sprouting is permitted in Japan. The initial quantity of over 1500 tons of irradiated potatoes had decreased to 810 tons in 2005. It dropped to 330 tons in 2006 because of new retail labeling regulations, but has gradually recovered to 630 tons by 2010 after concerted efforts from businesses to educate the public.
